Hypnosis

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a course of action where a trained therapist or clinical hypnotist guides their patient to a deeper state of mental awareness. In this state they become highly focused on their thoughts or actions and are more receptive to suggestions. It is often used to identify the specific mental, emotional or physical behaviors that are stored in the unconscious memory that can create blocks in our ability to develop beyond a current state of being. Situations where this hypnosis therapy can be helpful include:

  • Weight management
  • Stress management
  • Anxiety
  • Increase healing process
  • Improve ability to relax
  • Eliminate bad habits
  • Self-acceptance
  • Self-confidence and esteem
  • Improve athletic performance
  • Increase concentration and focus
  • Test anxiety
  • Overcome fears or phobias
  • Remove panic attacks
  • Improve sleep
  • Stop smoking
  • Improve sales and management ability

Like any form of treatment

Hypnosis cannot guarantee and absolute cure; but it can help treat many problems involving psychosomatic forces. Dr. Thoma is a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists and has been successful in using hypnosis either individually ,or as a component of combined therapy with chiropractic care, acupuncture or nutrition counseling. This strategy has provided rapid results to his patients seeking a Total Health Correction.

Can I Be Hypnotized?

About of 95% of people are already able to experience some level of hypnotism. If you can imagine something in your mind, you can experience some level of hypnosis. In fact, most people are in and out of a hypnotic state many times during the average day. For example:

  • Have you ever become so focused on a TV show that you lose track of time?
  • Have you ever become so focused on your work you did not realize someone was talking to you?
  • Have you ever been driving and suddenly realized you missed your turn and cannot remember the last few moments?

A hypnotherapist can actually test in advance to see how likely you are to respond to hypnosis therapy before suggesting this course of action.

Will I Do Things I Don’t Want To Do During Hypnosis?

No. While in a hypnotic state, you are in complete control of your actions. You will not do anything against your will. As a trained hypnotherapist, Dr. Thoma will gently lead you into a hypnotic state through a guided meditation exercise designed specifically for your needs. You will be offered suggestions that can replace your existing behavior with a new response that supports the outcome you would like to achieve. (For example: When you feel like smoking, replace that action with something more healthy; like eating fruit.) Again, the new action has to be acceptable behavior by your conscious mind in order to be effective.

What Should I Expect at My First Hypnosis Visit?

Hypnosis sessions are performed at our offices in Chesterfield, Missouri. At the beginning of your first session, Dr. Thoma will confidentially discuss your reasons for seeking hypnosis. He will then establish your learning modalities (visual, auditory, and/or kinesthetic) to customize your session and make it as effective as possible.

After all your questions about hypnosis have been answered, you will be asked to have a seat in a chair that will allow you to recline and relax without sleeping. While you get comfortable, Dr. Thoma will prepare your customized session. He will then guide you into a deep state of relaxation. Once you are relaxed, your response will be tested through hypnotic suggestion. Once your relaxation level is appropriate, Dr. Thoma will provide you with the hypnotic suggestions specific to your unique situation that will help you to accelerate results.

After you emerge from hypnosis, you will feel relaxed and refreshed. Although you may not remember the entire experience, Dr. Thoma will spend some time talking about your experience and reviewing the session. It is likely that you will be surprised to discover how much time has passed and what topics were covered.

Depending on your unique situation, Dr. Thoma may recommend two-to-four hypnosis sessions spaced no more than a week or so apart. This timing improves the success of the short term hypnosis approach used at Total Health Correction.
